Application
The FIU is mainly used to multiplex and demultiplex the main path and the optical supervisory channel (OSC).
For the application of the board in WDM systems, see Figure 1.
Figure 1 FIU board application in a WDM system
NOTE:
An OTU is a transceiver that can transmit and receive signals over the same wavelength at the same time.
Functions and Features
The main functions and features supported by the FIU are multiplexing or demultiplexing.
For detailed functions and features, see Table 1.
Table 1 Functions and features of the FIU board
Functions and Features | Description |
Basic function | Implements the multiplexing and demultiplexing of the main path and the OSC. |
Optical power detection | The TNF2FIU board supports optical power detection at multiplexing input (MI) optical ports whereas the TNF1FIU does not. |
WDM specification | Supports both the DWDM and CWDM specifications. |
Operating wavelengths of the OSC | Supports 1310 nm and 1611 nm wavelengths. |
Working Principle and Signal Flow
The FIU unit consists of the following parts: optical module, optical power detection module, and communication module.
Figure 1 is the functional block diagram of the TNF1FIU board. Figure 2 is the functional block diagram of the TNF2FIU board.

Signal Flow
The multiplexing module multiplexes the main path optical signals received through the RX optical port and the supervisory optical signals received through the SI optical port into one channel of optical signals. The one channel of signals is output through the OUT optical port.
The IN optical port receives line optical signals, which are then sent to the demultiplexing module. The module demultiplexes the line optical signals into the main path optical signals and supervisory channel signals, and outputs them through the TX and SO optical ports respectively.
Module Function
Optical module
Performs the multiplexing and demultiplexing of main path signals and supervisory channel signals.
Optical power detection module
Detects input optical power of service signals in a timely manner.
NOTE:
Only the TNF2FIU board supports the detection of input optical power.
Communication module
Communicates with the system control, switching, and timing board, to control and operate on each module of the unit.
Front Panel
There are ports on the front panel of the board.
Appearance of the Front Panel
Figure 1 shows the front panel of the FIU board.
Figure 1 Front panel of the FIU board
Indicators
The FIU board does not have indicators.
Ports
Table 1 lists the type and function of each port.
Table 1 Ports on the front panel of the FIU
Port | Connector Type | Description | Required Cable |
IN/OUT | LC | Receives/Transmits line signals. | Connectors |
RX/TX | LC | Receives/Transmits main path signals. | |
SI/SO | LC | Receives/Transmits OSC signals. |
Laser Hazard Level
The laser hazard level of the board is HAZARD LEVEL 1M, indicating that the maximum power launched by the board ranges from 10 dBm (10 mW) to 21.3 dBm (136 mW).
Valid Slots
The FIU occupies one slot.
Table 1 Valid slots for the FIU board
Chassis | Valid Slots |
1800 V Chassis | Sots 1-14, and slot 19 |
1800 I Chassis | Sot 1, slot 3, and slot 4 |
1800 II Compact Chassis | Sot 1 to slot 7 |
1800 II Enhanced Chassis | Sot 1 to slot 6 |
1800 OADM Frame | Sot 1 to slot 4 |
Display of Slots
On the U2000, the board occupies one logical slot.
When the board is installed in the 1800 I chassis, 1800 II chassis, the slot number displayed on the U2000, Web LCT, or in the command line represents the slot housing the board.
When the board is installed in the 1800 OADM frame:
If the 1800 OADM frame works with the 1800 I chassis, the slot number displayed on the U2000, Web LCT, or in the command line is a digit ranging from 7 to 10.
If the 1800 OADM frame works with the 1800 II Compact chassis, the slot number displayed on the U2000, Web LCT, or in the command line is a digit ranging from 12 to 15.
When the board is installed in the 1800 V chassis, the slot number displayed on the U2000, Web LCT, or in the command line represents the slot housing the board.
Optical Ports
This topic describes the display of optical ports on the board.
Display of Optical Ports
Table 1 lists the sequence number displayed in an NMS system of the optical ports on the FIU board front panel.
Table 1 Display of the FIU optical ports
Optical Port | Optical Port Displayed on the NMS |
IN/OUT | 1 |
RX/TX | 2 |
SI/SO | 3 |
NOTE:
An optical port number displayed on the U2000 indicates a pair of actual optical ports, one for transmitting signals, and the other for receiving signals.
FIU Parameters on the NMS
This section lists the board parameters that can be set or queried by using the NMS.
For parameters of the FIU, refer to Table 1.
Table 1 FIU parameters
Field | Value | Description |
Optical Interface/Channel | - | Displays the position of the optical interface. |
Optical Interface Name | - |
Sets and queries the Optical Interface Name. An Optical Interface Name contains a maximum of 64 characters. Any characters are supported. |
Channel Number Mode |
C40 Mode, C80 Mode, CWDM Mode Default:/ |
Sets the number of wavelengths supported by the board. NOTE: When OptiX OSN 1800 I&II compact chassis uses the F1SCC board, this parameter is not supported. |
Launch Power(dBm) |
-60 to 60 Default:/ |
When the incident optical power of the transmission fiber is less than the nominal output power of the transmitting OA board, set Launch Power for the transmitting OA board to ensure desired main optical channel power adjustment effects in SOM function. See Setting Incident Optical Power for more information. NOTE: When OptiX OSN 1800 I&II compact chassis uses the F1SCC board, this parameter is not supported. |
